Lubricating oil helps reduce friction, remove heat, and protect the internal components of a rotary screw air compressor. For a new compressor, the first oil change is often scheduled after approximately 500 operating hours. After that, follow the interval specified in the owner's manual. Change the oil sooner if it becomes water-contaminated or emulsified, or shows signs of significant deterioration or carbon buildup. Oil type and service intervals vary by model and operating conditions, so always follow the instructions for your compressor.
Shut down and secure the compressor
Stop the compressor using the normal shutdown procedure, close the discharge valve, and isolate the power to prevent accidental startup. Follow the owner’s manual to confirm the system is in a safe pressure condition before servicing. Never disable the pressure relief valve or open an oil line while it is pressurized.
Drain the oil while it is warm
Warm oil flows more easily and can help carry suspended particles out of the system. After shutdown, make sure the pressure and temperature are safe before draining. Use care to avoid burns.
Connect a drain hose and collect the used oil
Connect a drain hose to the drain port, open the ball valve, and drain the oil into a suitable waste-oil container. Dispose of used oil responsibly.
Drain any remaining oil from the system
Oil may remain in the lines, cooler, and airend. Whether these components need to be disconnected and cleaned depends on the compressor model and its condition. Follow the manual; have a qualified technician handle disassembly or flushing when needed.
Add new oil
Once draining is complete, close the drain valve and open the oil fill cap. Add the compressor oil specified for your model, then bring the level within the indicated range as directed in the manual. Do not overfill. Reinstall the fill cap and check that its O-ring is correctly seated.
Replace the oil filter
Replace the oil filter during the oil change. Apply a thin film of new oil to the filter’s rubber gasket, then install the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid overtightening.
Restart and check the oil level
Confirm that the fill cap and drain valve are secure and that all tools have been removed. Restart the compressor according to the manual and check for leaks or unusual operation. After shutdown, recheck the oil level as instructed and add a small amount if needed.
Because this procedure involves heat, pressure, and electrical equipment, consult the owner’s manual before servicing. If you are unsure how to safely drain the system or check the oil level, contact a qualified service technician.
